Episode 20: Content is King, Baby!

All links to Ravelry are labelled as such. I try to include links to outside websites as much as possible. At this time, I am not including links for purchasing yarns, needles, etc. If I do, they will also be appropriately labelled. As a quick reminder: I am not affiliated with any businesses. If you’d like to show your support of the podcast, please rate and review on your listening device, follow me on instagram, and / or join the ravelry discussion group (ravelry link) if it is safe for you to do so.

There is a f&$*#ing PODCAST HERE NOW

Joining me as the second ever side-car rider is Audio-Man (ravelry link). I was very excited to have him as my second guest. Curator of sponsor of the show Mom’s Yarn Stash – our mother taught me how to knit, and I in turn taught Audio-Man. His growth as a knitter has been remarkable, and I was honored that he agreed to join me as a co-host for this episode.

A happy Audio-Man

Life on the Road Update – 01:54

Audio-Man says Hi Everybody! I should let ya’ll know that even though his ravelry page is linked above, he is not prolific on the social medias. So it is rather empty. He gives ya’ll a peek behind the curtains of the mysteries of podcasting.

The knitting for the MHK level 1 has completely passed. Our celebrating seems premature in retrospect because at the time that I am typing this post, I have not officially passed level 1 yet. However, we do circle around and touch on more of why Spinning on 2 Wheels got started.

Mom’s Yarn Stash: OMG – 12:12

Fashionably Riding – 12:36

In this episode’s Fashionably Riding the Koi Pond Shawl (ravelty link) was used as both a shawl and a reference for the color stripe progression of the Ultimate Koi Pond Meta Socks.

Audio-Man flexed his superior math skills to make his very own Cabled V-neck Pullover vest. Originally published in Jan 1963 in Coats & Clarks book #140. The pattern is available for free through Free Vintage Knitting here. Audio-Man used Caron One Pound in the colorway ‘Ocean‘ (ravelry link). It was his first ever cabled knit. And his first experience picking up stitches for collars and sleeves. And his first fitted piece!

Audio-Man strikes a pose in his first ever fitted garment and cable project.
The details of the cables

He has also been wearing his own Chenille vest, from an un-named patter that was published on the inside of the label of Lion Brand Lion Chenille Thick & Quick (ravelry link) in the colorway ‘Dusty Blue’. Not mentioned, but an important detail: Larry decided later that he wanted his vest to close and he added the closures from JUL Designs.

The closures are from JUL Designs.

I have been wearing the Churfirsten Socks (ravelry link) made from Knitologie Cozy Sock Yarn in the colorway ‘Citrus Breeze’.

Open Throttle – 22:32

The Ultimate Koi Pond Meta Socks (ravelry link) have 5 color stripes. The base yarn is Sourdough Sock (ravelry link) in the colorway ‘marshmellow’ from Kim Dyes Yarn, and the color stripes are in the Croissant Sock (ravelry link) base also from Kim Dyes Yarn.

The sock grew between recording and taking this picture

Audio-man hastily cast on a vanilla garter-stitch scarf so that he would have something to talk about. He is using Edie Eckman’s pattern “My First Scarf” (ravelry link). The pattern and story behind it will be linked in the up coming Side Car bonus episode. Audio-man is using Bernat Alpaca (ravelry link) in the colorways ‘Tomato’ and ‘Aqua’. And he has about 20 rows completed. It is both his first colorwork project and his first project made from his own stash and not shamelessly nicked from sponsor of the show: Mom’s Yarn Stash.

The scarf also grew between recording and the picture.

The Wingspan has grown enough to begin the second color of the gradient kit – ‘Concord Grapes’. The kit is the Yowza mini-skeins (ravelry link) gradient kit from Miss Babs called ‘Vineyard’.

Photo taken during surgery in a car. 0/10 do not recommend. But the colors are pretty.

Fiber Fuckery: You Decide. – 33:41

Stalled – 34:01

Audio-Man is not riding this segment, I however, managed to stall-out a couple of times. On the Wingspan, I had to re-work a section of 8 stitches and 5 rows about 4 times to line up the ‘feathers’ of the shawl.

I also chose to delay the start of the third color stripe of the Ultimate Koi Pond Meta Socks to avoid hand winding a ball of yarn while at work. I ended up re-making the first lightest blue color stripe due to weak spots in the yarn.

Pigments of Inspiration: Does the WHY Matter? – 38:33

Unboxing – 39:00

We opened the October Knitcrate together. The theme for this KnitCrate is ‘Fiber Feast’. We mistakenly identified this as the November crate. It is Not.

Not that kind of Fiber Feast!

The yarn I received was Vidalana Tweedy Sheep (ravelry link) in the colorway ‘Apple Picking’; a delightfully bright apple green with scrumptious brown, black, and natural colored donegal flecks.

The Power of Yarn Compels thee!!!
