Episode 15: Jack’s Wings

All links to Ravelry are labelled as such. I try to include links to outside websites as much as possible. At this time, I am not including links for purchasing yarns, needles, etc. If I do, they will also be appropriately labelled. As a quick reminder: I am not affiliated with any businesses. If you’d like to show your support of the podcast, please rate and review on your listening device, follow me on instagram, and / or join the ravelry discussion group (ravelry link) if it is safe for you to do so.

This is a heavy episode. If the passing of a loved one is not something you are up for hearing/reading about, skip this one, go back and listen to the introduction of the Koi Pond Socks. It has AudioMan and he’s delightful.

I also apologize for the odd audio. The typical setup was…. non-functional. Some sections could not be re-recorded and will sound a little different.

Life on the Road – 02:49

Jack’s Wings in a heart

This episode was written at the bedside of my Father-In-Law. And recorded after his passing. I was only in Jack’s life for the last 10 years, but he was certainly a character and his presence in my life made quite the impact. He passed away on the 27th of August at 9:30 in the evening. Husbando and I, as well as the rest of the family, spent the week sitting vigil with Jack and celebrating his life. He will be missed.

Fashionably Riding – 07:28

The Magic Sweater A.K.A. the Essential Cardigan (ravelry link) by Laura Grutzeck made an appearance because hospital rooms are cold as all-get-out.

Mom’s Yarn Stash: omg – 09:09

Unboxing – 09:33

This month I was sent a delightful package from KnitCrate under the theme ‘INDULGE’. The Knit and Crochet club received a bulky weight yarn: Audine Wool’s Mellow (ravelry link). I received the colorway ‘Mimosa’, but the naming scheme is a mystery to me. Bulky weight yarn is not something I typically reach for so I will enjoy that. The extra little surprise in the package is a folding magnetic bookmark, and it is already firmly entrenched in my nightly reader.

Open Throttle – 16:02

The Koi Pond Socks have a swatch completed. I used Kim Dyes Yarns Croissant Sock yarn in White (ravelry link). Koi Pond is of course, my project name for the Meta (ravelry link) socks by Kino Knits. The leftover colors I will be using are from a Shawl kit called the Ultimate Koi Pond kit.

Meta – Koi Pond Socks – raw materials

Jack’s Wings (ravelry link) are the only other knitting I have been working on before recording this episode or since. The pattern is Anna Beltzer Wings of Peace by Renate Haeckler. The pattern was available for free through ravelry, but the information on the prayer shawls ministries website is essential. The yarn I am using is from Dragonfly FibersBugga! (ravelry link). It is the MDSW 2020 festival exclusive colorway (ravelry link) ‘Together, Yet Apart’.

I have made one of these wings for my Mother-In-Law on size 4.5 mm circular needles.

Fiber Fuckery: YOU Decide! – 26:50

Stalled – 27:09

Jack’s Wings are the only item in Stalled this episode. The pattern is not the most clear in my opinion. Standard pattern requirements, such as needle sizes, gauge measurements, yarn weight recommendations, typical abbreviations etc are not included in this pattern. The information is available, for free, on the Prayer Shawls Ministries website, but one must dig through blocks of text for the information. Which I will fully admit, is difficult for me on any given day, but especially during the last two weeks. I had to completely rip out 7 or so rows and because this project is so special and has such great meaning attributed to it, the toll that took was intense. And I had to do that in front of an audience.
