Episode 63: A Needling Problem Beading into Submission

All links to Ravelry are labelled as such. I try to include links to outside websites as much as possible. At this time, I am not including links for purchasing yarns, needles, etc. If I do, they will also be appropriately labelled. As a quick reminder: I am not affiliated with any businesses.

Life on the Road Update – 02:09

Allergies hit me like a train. I don’t normally suffer from seasonal allergies, so this is both unpleasant and unexpected.

Open Throttle – 03:41

The ‘Sakura Sashay Socks‘ (ravelry link) became the sole knitting to come with Mr. Kickass and I on our anniversary trip. The shades of pink and gray in A Hundred RavensSakura” (purchase link) on the ‘Patos‘ (ravelry link) perfectly match our wedding colors and our theme had been sakura blossoms. When the coincidences pile up like that, it’s probably best to roll with it.

The God-Daughter’s Shawl‘ (ravelry link) is finished! The complete kit for this shawl, including yarn, pattern, and beads was purchased from Bead Biz.

Stalled – 24:55

The ‘Sakura Sashay Socks’ have given me some trouble. Somehow, despite making the socks two-at-a-time, they are not on the same pattern row.

I think this is the problem. There should be another row here.

Gear Check – 29:58

There were two beading needles used for the ‘God-Daughter’s Shawl’.

Twisted Beading Needle

Company: Tulip Needles. Material: Nickel Titanium alloy. Size purchased: Long, approx. 120mm. Purchased from: Potomac Beads

Tulip Online Retailer Catalog, product image is found on page 87.

This Image is a SCREENSHOT from Tulip’s retailer catalog. I DO NOT OWN THIS IMAGE!

Pros

  • Did not snag or split yarn
  • No snagging of beads
  • Easy to manipulate through the bead holes
  • Stays where positioned on the working yarn

Cons

  • Cost
  • Inadequate instructions
    • Despite more detailed instructions being provided to retailer
  • Contradictory information provided by retailer
  • Tensile strength
    • i.e. it broke.

I would like to reiterate that Tulip Needles provided the usage information to retailers via their online catalog for retailers. Information that Potomac Beads failed to provide or even allude to. The catalog is linked in the additional information and the pertinent page is provided.

But just in case you don’t feel like opening that PDF, this is a screenshot of the instructions provided in the catalog. This image belongs to Tulip Needles, I do not own this image.
Large Eye Beading Needle

Company: Uoou. Material: unspecified metal. Purchased through amazon.

This is what they looked like.

Pros

  • Easy to hold multiple beads
  • Multiple sizes of needle in kit
  • Storage tube included

Cons

  • Manual manipulation of needle necessary for use
    • Can lead to breaking
    • Also impossible on smaller sizes
  • Slides on working yarn
  • Split and snagged working yarn
  • Catapulted several beads to locations unknown
    • Beads have yet to be located.
Do we get why this one was sometimes hard to see?
